What does a City Digital Officer do?
Rachel Sterne is in a great position to define what a City Chief Digital Officer is responsible for. She has recently become New York City’s First Chief Digital Officer – position responsible for helping the mayor’s office “develop forward-thinking policies on social media, digital communications, web 2.0 initiatives and other tools to better serve the public”.
Rachel’s first assignment will be to take suggestions from people on ways the city can improve its digital communications. She has been tweeting “got an idea for how #nyc gov’t can use social & new technology? send a message to nyc’s chief digital officer @rachelsterne.” In a statement, Sterne expressed her goal in this role “is to help the world’s greatest city become the world’s most innovative city through online and mobile technologies that help citizens and enhance the quality of services.”
It will be interesting to see if Houston elects a Chief Digital Officer to help work with city agencies to streamline communication across social platforms. If you think we need a Chief Digital Officer, write to City Hall at houstontxdotgov@houstontx.gov
